I needed carpal metacarpal surgery on my hand and had put it off for as long as I could because 1) I had never had surgery and didn’t want any and 2) I was a sponsored professional mountain bike rider and rode 7 days a week twice a week as well as run and strength train and didn’t want to give that up for recovery. Finally the pain and swelling in my hand effected riding, working out and work. Dr. Murthy was my surgeon and the only thing I can say is WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG???? The surgery was perfect, the next day I went for a morning run with my splint and no pain without taking any pain meds and it was beautiful. I called her right after and told her how great I felt no pain, no swelling and thanked her. She was a little concerned about me exercising so soon but realized she was wasting her breath. 3 days later I was back on my bike, on my rollers in my garage being very careful with my splinted hand and was able to start riding carefully for 1-2 hours. It was awesome!
The following week I had a problem. I had sweated so much that my splint was starting to fall apart and smell really bad. I called Dr. Murthy and asked her if she had any time if I came in to change my dressings. She was great, the next morning in between her appointments she got me in. When she saw the splint and smelled how bad it was she didn’t know what to do. Only thing she could do , breath carefully and change it. I was hoping she wasn’t mad but I think she amused at how happy I was, and pain-free, healing everyday while doing what I love exercising. I didn’t resume riding outdoors for 3 months to be safe, but as soon as I did I was able ride for 3 hours without my hand throbbing or swelling.
Dr. Murthy rocks! If I ever have to have my other hand done would I do it again? Yep, but only with her as my surgeon. She is meticulous as a surgeon, and very very caring with her patients, she follows up weekly, makes herself available to them if they have concerns or problems and her door is always open for them.
