I was seen by Dr Zwahlen in 2008 after suffering an injury during soccer practice in which, it turned out, I had torn 3/4 ligaments in my left knee (ACL, PCL & LCL). Having only been in the US for 1 week on my year of study abroad from the UK, it was a truly harrowing experience and not the way I wished to start my life in the US. From the outset, Dr Zwahlen was empathetic, honest, knowledgeable and safety conscious. All things you need when going through a life changing event. He opted for … [Read more...]

Dr. Zwahlen has replaced both of my knees and one hip. There were also some revisions to a badly injured knee. I recently had an opportunity to visit Machu Picchu in Peru. I’ve never been much of a hiker, but the doctor convinced me that I could do it. So I did! There were 8,000 feet of elevation, uneven stone steps with no railings and absolutely stunning views. High adventure for a 70-year-old patient. Dr. Zwahlen’s optimism is contagious. — Carol M. … [Read more...]

My follow-ups with Dr. Zwahlen are always enlightening. He uses analogies to compare how my shoulder functions. He is an attentive listener, caring and takes much time to address my issues. He has good suggestions for me in order to improve my shoulder function and possible exercises to achieve those movements. He is able to relate how my existing cerebral palsy issues relate to how well my shoulder functions. His final suggestion is to return to my orthopedist, Dr. Gamble, a noted expert in … [Read more...]

Thanks Doctor Zwahlen, The photo shows Mount Lassen over my shoulder, taken from the peak of Brokeoff Mountain. The trail to get to where I am sitting is 7.4 miles, round trip, with an elevation gain of 2,600 feet. (And then, of course, you have to come down again.) The peak itself is 9,235 feet. On the day I hiked there, the weather was clear and wonderful, but the snow on the ground ranged from ankle deep to past my knees. I had absolutely no trouble with my knee on the day of the … [Read more...]

Dr. Zwahlen, this is a fan letter. We never heard tell of a surgeon who advises against surgery, till we met you, that is. Seriously, we were both impressed with your cautious approach to Nathan’s “bone on bone” hip condition; recommending Celebrex instead of hip replacement. From the first pill, he has been completely pain free, still walking 2 miles several days a week now and minus the aches when lying in bed. Piggybacking on his success, I was prescribed Celebrex by my primary doctor and the … [Read more...]

I have the utmost respect for Dr. Zwahlen and Dr. Roghair. I really feel they are working to achieve excellence. They are not just incredibly talented and skilled physicians; I know that they care and wanted the very best for the their patients. Now I am looking forward to again riding a bike, which I haven’t been able to do for years. I want to thank you for the way you have been handling my broken fibula. Although this routine fracture must be a ho-hum issue for a surgeon, Dr. Zwahlen, you … [Read more...]
