Knee Specialist
C. R. Strotz, M.D. is a specialist in knee surgery and sports medicine. In addition to his private practice, which is focused on knee problems, he has been active on a national level in teaching arthroscopic surgery to other orthopaedic surgeons and developing educational tools and materials to help orthopaedists evaluate and increase their knowledge of sports medicine.
Dr. Strotz has been an orthopaedic consultant for the University of California at Berkeley, and has served as an on-the-field consultant for the athletic department. For 10 years he was the team physician for Women’s athletics a UC Berkeley.
After graduating cum laude from Yale University with departmental honors in psychology and participating with the University water polo and swim teams, Dr. Strotz received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. Following his internship at San Francisco General Hospital, he served two years as a medical systems research analyst for the Indian Health Service branch of the Public Health Service. He returned to UC San Francisco and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery. As a resident, Dr. Strotz was trained in joint replacement surgery and diagnostic arthroscopy of the knee. Soon after starting private practice, he developed an interest and expertise in arthroscopic surgery, and was one of the first surgeons in the Bay Area to use arthroscopy to treat knee injuries.
Dr. Strotz MD is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and is currently a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon and the Bay Area Knee Society. As the chair of the Committee on Evaluation – Sports Medicine for the AAOS, he and the committee were instrumental in developing tools and test for orthopaedic surgeons to evaluate and improve their skills in sports medicine. Dr. Strotz served as a reviewer for the journal of Arthroscopy and was a member of the Data Collection and Membership committees for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is the secretary/treasurer and past president of the UCSF Orthopaedic Alumni Group. Dr. Strotz has repeatedly been named as One of San Francisco’s Top Doctors by San Francisco magazine and Best of the East Bay by Oakland magazine.
