Dr. Eppley is dual Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS) since 1993 and is CAQ Board Certified in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine with specialization in injuries to the shoulder and knee. The Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) is awarded to a select few orthopaedic surgeons who have qualified for this distinction.
Dr. Eppley has been the lead orthopaedic surgeon for the University of California at Berkeley athletic teams for 25 years. His duties include sideline coverage and travel with the CAL football team. He is the Chief of Orthopaedics for the CAL Student Health Service.
As a nationally recognized leader in shoulder and knee surgery he has performed approximately 10,000 shoulder and knee procedures. Dr. Eppley has published, lectured and instructed numerous surgical teaching laboratories nationally. He has participated as a Master Surgeon at the Orthopaedic Academy Learning Center in Illinois.
Dr. Eppley performs arthroscopic and open surgeries of the shoulder and knee, including ACL and ligament reconstruction, patellar ligament reconstruction, meniscus repairs, microfracture, osteochondral grafts, bankart repairs, rotator cuff tendon repairs, AC repairs, open reduction internal fixation of the clavicle and humerus, partial and total replacement of the knee and shoulder as well as resurfacing of the humeral head and reverse shoulder replacement.
Dr. Eppley has repeatedly been voted to “The Bay Area’s Best Doctors” by Focus Magazine, “Best of the East Bay” by Oakland Magazine and “One of San Francisco’s Top Doctors” by San Francisco Magazine. Dr. Eppley has been named to the Super Doctors list published in the San Francisco Chronicle Sunday Magazine. He has also been recognized nationally as one of the “Top Doctors in America” and “One of the Best Doctors in America.” Dr. Eppley is the only orthopaedic surgeon in Berkeley named to the Global Directory of Who’s Who – Top Doctors. His patients have honored him multiple times with the Patient’s Choice recognition. Of the nation’s 720,000 active physicians, less than 5% were accorded this honor in 2011.
Dr. Eppley is part of the “Best Doctors” Program, which is a national organization comprised of distinguished experts in their field. “Best Doctors” are selected by their peers to review difficult cases from around the world. Patients who desire an expert second opinion send their history and diagnosis to Dr. Eppley to gain a better understanding of their treatment options.
Dr. Eppley was educated at Swarthmore College and Yale University, followed by medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio where he graduated with honors. He completed 7 years of surgical residency and fellowship at Case Western Reserve University, Harvard University and Tufts University. Dr. Eppley is an Au franc Fellow from the prestigious New England Baptist Hospital in Boston where he trained in Total Joint Replacement. He is also a Southern California Orthopaedic Institute Fellow, having trained with the premier Arthoscopic Surgery Training Program in Los Angeles.
As an athlete, Dr. Eppley competed in the Ohio High School regional tennis competitions, played college basketball and was a member of the college swim team. He currently lives in Orinda with his wife Karen and children Sarah, Emma and Robert and remains physically active.
